There is a huge trend these days to "go green". The environment is probably one of the issues that is at the forefront of everyone's mind, which is surprising since we seem to be living in an almost totally throwaway society. I mean every day there are more products that are supposed to make our lives easier, but they actually just create more junk for the entire world to deal with. Does that really make anything easier?

Think about it. There are "new and improved" cleaning tools like Swiffer and Pledge Grab-it that, I admit, are great tools. But every time you use it you end up adding twice as much garbage to your trash can. Honestly, is a broom and dustpan really that bad? Can we no longer use a simple rag or old t-shirt scrap to do our dusting?

Or how about all of the 100-calorie packs that food companies are putting out in endless supply? Now this all caters to everyone's diet obsession (that's a topic for another day) but think about this for just one second. Every time you tear open one of these small snacks you end up with a plastic or paper bag that goes in the trash times however many servings are in the box. Where Do Easter Eggs Come From?

When you think of Easter, what's the first thing that comes to mind? Getting up super early for church, maybe? Or possibly getting a new Easter dress or suit? Or is it the basket full of candy you're sure to find at the foot of your bed? Well, as I consider the topic the first thing that comes to mind is, of course, the infamous egg hunt. But where do Easter eggs come from?

Legend has it that the mythical Easter Bunny sneaks into children's homes the night before Easter Sunday and places a basketful of goodies at the foot of their bed or spends the evening hiding trinkets and eggs for them to find upon waking. And on top of that, it is told that not only does this stealthy rabbit bring treats, but it actually is believed to lay the eggs itself! While that's a little off the beaten path of reality, these Easter symbols actually do have a rhyme and reason.

Easter, as a concept, is representative of a time of birth, renewal, and fertility. Whether it is the Christian belief of the resurrection of Christ or the Pagan influence of the goddess Ēostre, certainly it is easy to see the relationship to renewal. Both eggs (naturally) and rabbits (hence the many sayings) are symbols of fertility. But why all the colors?

Well, while no one knows why we color our eggs at this time of year, it is believed that this all started, again, to symbolize fertility and renewal. Red is often used by Christians to represent blood, both as the birth of spring and as the symbolic reference to the blood of Jesus Christ. Green is also one of the most popular colors as it represents the bursting forth of the green trees and plants as springs moves in.

So that only leaves one question... where do Easter eggs really come from? Well, I think I'll stick with the Easter Bunny on this one. While over time we do not stick as steadfastly to the true egg, I'd hate not to get my basket filled right before the holiday.

A Short History of Spices

For thousands of years man has relied on the aromatic plants that could be found in their own backyards to create medicine and to flavor their foods. Fortunately, in most areas of the world there was an abundance of native plants. In ancient Europe there could be found dill, marjoram, parsley, thyme and a vast array of other herbs. However, when it came to spices there was another story farther to the East.

Spices. Just the word would call up visions of exotic locations and peoples with mysterious ways: India, Ceylon and the Spice Islands, including Sumatra (with its peppercorns) and the spices of Java, Bali, the Moluccas and more. At the height of the civilizations of Greece and Asia Minor a flourishing spice trade between east and west was already well established. Spices were brought from their native lands to India, which became the center of the spice trade.

As the Greeks, and later the Romans conquered and colonized the known world, they took their knowledge of spices with them. According to ancient records, the first mustard seed arrived in England in 50 B.C., brought by the Roman soldiers. Very quickly the value of these spices spread to the fierce tribes of Gaul and Celtic outlanders. By the year 410 A.D., the “barbarian” conqueror, Alaric the Visigoth, demanded 3,000 pounds of peppercorns as part of his prize for sparing the citizens of Rome. The value of spices in the Middle Ages can only be imagined today.

From the time of Marco Polo’s trek to India and beyond, more and more travelers ventured eastward, expanding the increasingly dangerous spice trade. A handful of cardamom was worth as much as a poor man’s yearly wages, and many a slave was bought and sold for a handful of peppercorns. Many a trader was murdered for the spices he carried.

Spices not only enhanced the flavor of food, but in the age before ice-boxes and refrigerators, spices were also used to preserve meat. During the Renaissance in Europe, spice cookery reached extremes of complexity. Hot spices, such as pepper, ginger, and cloves were mixed with native herbs like fennel and coriander. Sweet seasonings, such as anise, nutmeg and mint were often added for good measure.

Today modern methods of growing, curing, grinding, mixing and packaging have made a wide variety of spices available to all of us. The popularity of the Food Channel has given all of us a crash course on the value of a well spiced dish. Spices such as cardamom, nutmeg, ginger, and cinnamon are welcome additions to pies, cakes, and exotic dishes. The History of Mother's Day

In the hustle and bustle of life, Mother’s Day is a time to pay tribute to our mother and show her just how much we appreciate everything she’s done, and continues to do for us. It’s a very special day in the calendar for a very special person. But do you know the history of Mother’s Day?

Mother’s Day has its origins in ancient Greek and Roman festivals dedicated to maternal goddesses, but a more modern version of Mother’s Day began in the 1600s in England, with Mothering Sunday which was celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent (exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday). As early as 10 years of age, children started working as servants, and living in servants’ quarters on their wealthy employer’s grounds. Because children were often miles from their parents, Mothering Sunday became a cherished day where servants were permitted to return home to their mothers for the day, making it one of happiness and celebration.

A Day of Peace
In 1872 in the US, Julia Ward Howe, famous for writing the words to the Battle Hymn of the Republic during the Civil War, began promoting Mother’s Day as one dedicated to peace. In 1872, the holiday was just an idea being promoted, but by 1873 women in 18 US cities held Mother’s Day for Peace celebrations. While the number of celebrations dwindled from year to year, it held on for another three decades. In fact, Boston continued the annual celebration for ten consecutive years. Yet, for one reason or another, the celebrations ceased. (Can we get a ‘tisk ‘tisk).

Declaring a Holiday
During the second week in May of 1905, Anna Jarvis from Philadelphia was mourning the loss of her mother, Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis. During the Civil War, her mother organized women with the goal of working to improve sanitation conditions for both Union and Confederate soldiers on days called Mother’s Work Days. Her mother was an inspiration to Anna and in 1907 she held a memorial and campaigned to establish a national Mother’s Day.

Anna Jarvis and her supporters then wrote to ministers, businessmen, and politicians promoting their campaign in an endeavor to establish a national holiday and on May 14, 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed the Mother’s Day Proclamation. The second Sunday in May was officially declared Mother’s Day in the United States, and an International Mother’s Day Shrine was erected in Grafton, West Virginia, the childhood hometown of Anna Jarvis, to commemorate her achievement.

An International Celebration
Mother’s Day is celebrated around the world at different times during the year. However, some countries including Denmark, Finland, Italy, and Australia also celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May.

Regardless of the actual date Mother’s Day is celebrated, it’s an important day in the calendar and one on which we can give thanks to that very special person in our life: our mom.

The famous nine white letters on Mount Lee are famous for symbolizing the glamour. glitter, and glow of Hollywood. Originally constructed in 1923 as an advertisement for Harry Chandler's real estate development, the sign actually read "Hollywoodland." Over 4,000 low wattage bulbs illuminated the sign in three segments at night-- a breathtaking precursor to any famous electrified evening cityscapes. Initially needed for only about a year's worth of advertising, the Hollywood Sign made a surprising leap from billboard to historical landmark after the real estate development went under after the Great Depression.

Over 20 years of neglect left the sign in extreme disrepair. The "H" was completely gone, and in 1949 the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce took on the colossal task of restoring and maintaining the white vista. "Land" was dropped permanently from the Hollywood Sign, as the area was distinctively called "Hollywood," not "Hollywoodland." This would not be the first time gross negligence made the sign a victim.

1973 was a horrible year for the Hollywood Sign. The ceremony to make it an official City of Los Angeles landmark was ruined by weather, and more than three letters were seriously in trouble. The "D", third "O", and second "L" were all damaged by neglect or vandalism. As a protest, the sign was changed to read "Hollyweed," to raise awareness about tightening drug legislation. It wouldn't be the last time the sign was changed to mark significant events: 1987 saw "Holywood" in celebration of Pope John Paul II's visit.

The late 1970s and early 1980s saw a great renewal of interest in preserving the sign. An auction of each "letter" at the Playboy Mansion raised enough funds in 1978 for a completely new commissioning of the Hollywood Sign. A new coat of white paint has been applied twice in modern times, once in 1995 and again in 2005. Preservation of the Hollywood Sign now falls to three entities: the City of Los Angeles, who owns the land the sign sits on, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, and the Hollywood Sign Trust, who maintains the sign's repairs and regular upkeep.

On December 31, 1999, the Hollywood Sign was selected as an international monument to celebrate the world-wide Y2K event. The Hollywood Sign is a rags-to-riches story of a humble billboard reaching for an unlikely grasp of international stardom. It symbolizes the great hope of aspiring actors and actresses struggling to make it big on any screen. The Eiffel Tower History and Modern Art

The Eiffel Tower is a vast architectural achievement that stands erect at the very heart of Paris, France. It’s very shape and height is a landmark for thousands of visitors to admire. But how did the Eiffel Tower come to be?

Well it all began in 1887, when a young and bold engineer, Gustave Eiffel, sought out to build the highest and most imaginative steel structure of its day. The City of Paris saw how, throughout the world, new feats of architectural genius were blossoming, and so they wanted to create a spectacular build, the likes of nowhere in the world. They had heard about Gustave’s own metal work establishment and his outstanding skills in construction (such as the Porto Viaduct, the Garabit Viaduct and perhaps most famous, the Statue of Liberty) and so they hired him to plan and execute the construction of the Tower.

Gustave teamed up with two engineers, Maurice Koechlin and Emile Nouguier as well as another architect Stephen Sauvestre. He hoped that with this added combination of talented architects and engineers, he would be able to create the 324 metre high Tower to celebrate the French Revolution. Two years, two months and five days later, he had done just that! It was now in the later part of 1889 and the flagpole had been placed on top the great spectacle. Over 70,000 French men and women had travelled to Paris to watch the opening parade of the Tower, and all were amazed as they stood in wonder within the shadow of this enveloping sight.

The Tower’s total weight was a staggering 10,100 tons with a composition of 18,038 pieces and 2,500,000 rivets. It was, and is, one of the world’s most recognized structures and up to this date, has received over 236,445,812 visitors. Those who have travelled to the top, climb 1665 steps!

The History of Astronomy

When we look to the stars, we think of the unknown and the future, but more than any other science, astronomy is deeply rooted in the past. From Stonehenge to Galileo to the Hubble telescope, the following post details the history of astronomy.

Stonehenge
The Egyptians, Mayans, and Chinese were all avid observers of the heavens. Perhaps the most recognizable example in history is Stonehenge which was built to the movements of the sun by the Neolithic people of Britain. Stonehenge was important for religious reasons, but people also believed the stars could help guide their lives and foretell events. This was true in a very practical sense: accurately predicting the seasons helped farmers plan their crop season. The stars were also a guide in the sky, used by sailors to navigate journeys.

Around the World
Astronomy was one of the first branches of knowledge to rely on mathematics. In 256 BCE the Greek mathematician Eratosthenes calculated the circumference of the earth using the angles of shadows cast by the sun. About 140 CE Ptolemy, another Greek thinker, advanced a “geocentric” of the universe with the Sun orbiting the Earth.

The Telescope
Although Arabic astronomers and astrologers made advances over the next centuries, modern astronomy began with the invention of the telescope by Dutch lens maker Hans Lippershey in 1608. The next year Galileo Galilei used a telescope and discovered craters on the Moon and the four large moons of Jupiter.

Early telescopes were limited because their glass lenses tended to distort the images. Isaac Newton solved this problem in 1668 by inventing the reflecting telescope, using mirrors instead of lenses. A string of discoveries soon followed, including the discovery two new planets, Uranus (1781) and Neptune (11845).

Golden Age of Astronomy
The twentieth century became the Golden Age of astronomy. In 1901, the discovery of the first asteroid, Ceres, started a flood of new objects in the heavens as the tools astronomers work with have grown in variety and sophistication. In 1937 Grote Reber built the first radio telescope. Technological advances made possible huge telescopes like the one at Mount Palomar which has a 200-inch mirror.

The Hubble Telescope
Today astronomers have even more exiting tools. The best known of these is the Hubble Telescope, launched into Earth orbit by space shuttle Discovery in 1990. Amazingly, the Hubble is still based on Newton’s original reflecting telescope! Yet it and other space-based instruments are so powerful they have discovered more than 200 planets orbiting other stars.

Amateur Astronomy
Astronomy is unusual because amateurs remain an important part of the search for new knowledge, discovering supernovas, comets, and other objects. For example, the famous Shoemaker-Levy comet that struck Jupiter in 1994 was co-discovered by amateur David H. Levy—and it’s only one of 22 comets he has found! The future of astronomy is as bright as the stars astronomers study—and for the rest of us as well. It is one of the few areas in which non-professionals can actively participate in humanity’s search for knowledge.
